A Caring Place - Compassionate Connections

Bringing Care, Connection, and Hope

A Caring Place is an interfaith nonprofit organization serving the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. Our mission is to reach older adults and individuals with disabilities who are experiencing social isolation and loneliness and help them build meaningful connections, purpose, and community.

Loneliness has been recognized by the World Health Organization and former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy as a major public health concern. Its effects reach beyond the individual, impacting families, neighborhoods, and the entire community.

We help people feel valued, respected, and connected

Our Mission: We Help People

  • Feel valued, respected, and connected
  • Build meaningful relationships and friendships
  • Maintain independence and dignity
  • Access community resources and support services
  • Improve emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being

Purpose Through Service
Having a sense of purpose is essential to emotional and spiritual well-being.

Life changes such as retirement, disability, loss of employment, or reduced independence can leave individuals feeling disconnected from their sense of contribution and accomplishment.

At A Caring Place, we help participants recognize their strengths and continue making meaningful contributions to others.

Volunteer Opportunities Include:

  • Co-presenting short topics during social groups
  • Assisting with outreach and community events
  • Preparing materials for recruitment fairs
  • Participating in friendship and peer-support programs
  • Encouraging and supporting fellow participants

Together, we are building a community where no one has to face lonliness alone.

OUR PROGRAMS

Telephone Comfort Care Program
Our most popular service is the Telephone Comfort Care Program.

Participants are paired with a dedicated volunteer who calls several times each week to:

  • Provide friendly conversation
  • Offer emotional support
  • Conduct wellness check-ins
  • Reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation
  • Build lasting friendships and connections

What begins as a simple phone call often develops into meaningful, long-term relationships.

Social Connection Groups
We offer small socialization groups both virtually and in person that provide a welcoming and supportive environment where participants can:

  • Meet new people
  • Practice social skills and communication
  • Build confidence in connecting with others
  • Share experiences and interests
  • Develop supportive friendships

These groups create opportunities for genuine connection and a stronger sense of belonging.

Supporting Independent Living
Many of the individuals we serve face challenges related to limited mobility, transportation, or physical independence.

To help participants remain safely and independently in their homes, we assess needs related to:

  • Housing assistance
  • Food security
  • Transportation
  • Housekeeping and household support
  • Access to community resources and benefits

When assistance is needed, we help connect participants with available programs and services throughout the community.

Fighting Food Insecurity
Food insecurity is a serious challenge for many of our participants.

  • Approximately 20–30% of those we serve live below the poverty level.
  • Many have limited access to groceries and meal programs.
  • Waiting lists for community meal services are often lengthy.

To address this need, we provide nutritious noon meals delivered directly to participants' homes through our partnership with Sequel, Inc.

Ongoing fundraising efforts help ensure that no participant goes without access to a healthy meal.

You Are Not Alone

At A Caring Place, we believe that every person deserves connection, friendship, purpose, and belonging.

Read On! Intergenerational Reading Program
Our Read On! Program, directed by Ann Mendenhall, creates meaningful connections between seniors and elementary school students.

Participants read virtually with third-grade students from:

Christ the King School
Rosa Parks Elementary School
James Lane Allen Elementary School

The program promotes:

Literacy development
Intergenerational friendships
Increased confidence and engagement
A sense of purpose and achievement for both students and seniors
Participants and schools consistently report high levels of satisfaction with the program.

Spiritual Support
For participants seeking additional spiritual encouragement, a chaplain serving on our Advisory Council is available upon request.

Support is provided in a respectful and compassionate manner that honors each individual's faith tradition and personal beliefs.

Promoting Health and Wellness
Research shows that chronic loneliness can contribute to serious health concerns, including:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Cognitive decline and dementia
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Increased stress
  • Substance misuse
  • Reduced overall quality of life

To support physical and emotional wellness, we offer:

  • Stretching and flexibility classes
  • Coordination and movement activities
  • Mindfulness and relaxation exercises
  • Referrals to community fitness opportunities

We also encourage participation in exercise programs offered through the Lexington Senior Center.

UNIPER Digital Wellness Program
Participants age 60 and older with internet access may also benefit from UNIPER, an innovative digital platform that can be accessed through a television.

UNIPER provides:

  • Guided exercise programs
  • Wellness education
  • Brain fitness activities
  • Social engagement opportunities
  • Health and lifestyle resources

If you would like to learn more about UNIPER or any of our services, please contact us using the form on our website. We would be happy to answer your questions and help determine which programs may be right for you.
